Deep dive into the investigation behind “Drowning in Lies” and the follow up, “Smuggler Warlord, EU Ally”

This month we spoke to investigations editor, Maud Jullien about leading the “Drowning in Lies” investigation which revealed how Greek coast guards attempted to hide their role in a deadly shipwreck which took the lives of over 600 people trying to reach Europe. The follow up, “Smuggler Warlord, EU Ally” reveals how the smuggling network behind the wreck had close ties to powerful Libyan militia leader Khalifa Haftar. Maud spoke about the challenges throughout reporting on this story, and how the team went about analysing and verifying documents which proved the complicity of Greek coast guards who attempted to conceal the truth of what happened on the night of June 13th.
